70 miles east of Rhodes, and a few kilometers from the Turkish coast, lies the remotest of the inhabited islands of the Dodecanese. Set in a small archipelago, this island also known as Megisti or Meis, boasts a wonderful well-sheltered natural harbour. Although geographically very close to Turkey, Kastellorizo is totally Greek, from the architecture, the way of life and the atmosphere.
The island is now a port of entry, which makes it a convenient stop over from the Red Sea, Israel and Cyprus. It is one of the most picturesque of the Dodecanese islands, with the backdrop of steep mountains and rocky cliffs with the clearest blue water. The natural charm of the village, the peaceful atmosphere of the harbour front and the aura of bygone grandeur, have slowly contributed in transforming what was once a deserted backwater in to a haven for visitors in search of peace and seclusion. Over recent years the Australian ex-patriates have rediscovered their roots and have rebuilt and restored old family homes, making the village look a little less ruined than it once was. There is surprisingly quite a lot to see for such a small island, ruins, churches and the castle museum plus some fantastic walks in the mountains. The Blue Grotto is said to rival the one in Capri. The island has little traffic, only one taxi but does have an airport!
Hard to choose a favorite Greek island but Kastellorizo is our choice!
