The largest of the Dodecanese islands, Rhodes is one of those places where it is a privilege to be in the harbour beneath the impressive and romantic castle walls. It is always a thrill arriving there by boat for the first time. The Mandraki with its iconic windmills and unusual Italian Moorish architecture of the Nea Agora, has definitely had its hey day, when boats used to be moored up sometimes three from the quay and anchor chaos ensued!
But it is still a wonderful place to be and can accommodate bigger yachts. Colona opposite the impressive castle gates is the main harbour for larger yachts which gets busy as Rhodes is still one of the main stopping off points in the eastern Mediterranean and has a good infrastructure of yachting agencies, boatyard, chandlers and workshops. A stop over in Rhodes is not complete without a trip down to Lindos and anchor in that beautiful bay beneath the castle; another special place to be, with its lovely village, trendy bars and excellent restaurants.
For anyone in the yachting world under 40 it will probably come as a surprise to find out that many of us over that age started our yachting careers in Rhodes, when it was a major yachting center and ‘the’ place to be. We all have a few good stories about time spent in Rhodes! Full of different nationalities, a party every night and evenings spent at the infamous Popeye’s Bar. It is still a wonderful place to be especially at night wandering around the small streets and squares full of tavernas and bars.
