Jamestown (also known as Conanicut Island) is a beautiful island where visitors can enjoy a slow and relaxing pace with beautiful views at sunset across the bay to nearby Newport and Fort Adams. The lightly populated island is only nine miles long and one mile wide and is linked by two bridges to both Newport and the mainland. Due to its prominent position at the entrance of Narragansett Bay, the island was once a valued military outpost with several forts left behind as a reminder. Scenic Beavertail light has been restored and reaches into Rhode Island sound to guide boaters approaching the bay on each side. Today, the historic village has a casual mix of shops and restaurants and hosts a full service marina, with several notable marine services based nearby. Biking is very popular with great views all around the island. There is also a public golf course and many parks and beaches to explore.
