Considered by many the most beautiful seaside village in New England, Stonington remains one of the best-preserved and least commercial historic towns in Connecticut. Situated on a peninsula jutting into Fisher’s Island Sound, at the eastern end of Long Island Sound, the harbor has retained much of its 17th and 18th century flavor. Its central location makes it the perfect launching point for any cruise to favorite New England destinations such as Block Island, Fisher’s Island, Newport, Martha’s Vineyard, and the Elizabeth Islands. Connecticut’s only town facing the Atlantic, originally a bustling whaling, sealing, and transportation center, it is today home of the state’s last commercial fishing fleet. Historic buildings, first class restaurants, and eclectic stores line Water Street, the heart of the village, continuing up to the picturesque Old Lighthouse and the beautiful Dubois Beach. Down the north end of the street, well protected in the inner harbor, is Dodson Boatyard, one of the most acclaimed marinas/shipyards in New England, offering unrivalled attention to details to its customers in a friendly, familial ambiance. The whole community, with the input of Dodson Boatyard and the non-profit organization CUSH, is very pro-active in preserving the environment for everybody’s enjoyment, including future generations.
