St Barths Bucket 2016

February 16, 2016

Each spring, the world’s most impressive sailing yachts congregate on the stunning Caribbean island of St Barths to compete in a highly competitive regatta. The St Barths Bucket is a highlight of the regatta calendar and this year takes place from 17th-20th March. The regatta is one of the most popular sailing events in the Caribbean and is renowned for its fun and competitive but relaxed atmosphere, which attracts sailing enthusiasts from all over the world. This year’s event is sure to be one of the best yet. Spectators can expect to see a fleet of vessels ranging in size and type, from sloops to ketches and schooners.

St Barths Bucket is operated on an invitational basis and usually limits participants to a maximum of 30-40 yachts, most of which exceed 100 feet in length (30.5m). Some smaller yachts are invited under the ‘Grandfather Clause.’

The yachts comprise an assortment of classic and contemporary vessels. They are divided into four classes: Gazelles, Elegantes, Mademoiselles and Grande Dames. Specific courses are determined on the day of the race, but most routes lead participating yachts around a complete circumnavigation of the island. It’s intended to be a fun gentlemen’s type regatta, set in the Corinthian spirit, but there is still plenty of competitive action to keep crews alert and the crowds entertained.

From the shore, there are plenty of lookout points for guests to witness the action. The best place to catch the yachts close-up is at the starting and finishing point, Gustavia Harbour. Or get a bird’s eye view of the event from the island’s many peaks and cliffs. The fun atmosphere continues as night falls, with after parties and fundraising events organised in Gustavia’s many bars and restaurants or on the yachts.

Although not participating in the regatta, the elegant, sleek yacht S/Y PANTHALASSA is available for charter in the area. Built in 2010, PANTHALASSA is an immensely popular 56m charter yacht that fuses contemporary living with the finest nautical heritage. Guests onboard will have some enviable views of the Bucket, as the magnificent array of boats vie for the title of fastest luxury yacht. Spectators can enjoy unrivalled panoramas from the large sundeck, in addition to views from the oversized portholes windows within the yacht’s sophisticated interior. The light-infused interior was designed by Foster + Partners and features modern decor, including a central oval staircase and floating bar a flexible 6 cabin layout.
