Open during the day until late at night.
This bar has sunbeds on the harbourside for a relaxing time, but comes awake at night as one of the most popular bars on the island.
Open from morning until late at night. This bar is one of the main hangouts on the island. The bar is located underneath the lighthouse at the head of the harbour-hence the name Faros!
The building has seats all around overlooking the sea, lots of big umbrellas and sunbeds to chill out and sunbathe.
This bar comes alive late at night when it is very busy with all nationalities and ages. They always play a good selection of music.
This popular and friendly cafe is run by the lovely Elma and Vangelis. Situated directly on the harbour side, they take advantage of the morning shade to serve the best breakfast and lunch on Kastellorizo. Favorites include fruit salad with yoghurt and honey, fresh juice and well presented toasties, sandwiches and snacks. Also poular in the evening for drinks, ice cream - wonderful music and a nice ambience. There is also a computer available to use free of charge and wifi.
They also have a small carpentry business making furniture from reclaimed wood.
One of the best and most popular restaurants on the island. Superb home cooked Greek food, fish and shellfish.
Hard to beat for quality and price. They also have a very good wine selection.
Friendly family owned taverna, book ahead to ensure a table harbour side.
Our personal favorite!
One of the oldest and best known restaurants for visiting yachts, situated right by the small yacht quay. Many of the yachts that moor there eat in this restaurant making it very busy and popular. Good fish and seafood, home cooked Greek dishes with a good wine selection.
Book your table early to ensure the best table and ambience.
Wifi is available.
Another restaurant by the yacht quay; this is also popular with the visiting yachts. Good seafood and fresh fish amongst other dishes.
Situated on the square at the top of the hill next to the Church of Constantinos and Eleni; this open air restaurant under the eucalypyus trees is better known as Mediterraneo, after the Italian movie, which was filmed on the island.
Very good home cooked Greek food.
This square is the main venue for the Island's festivals-so book a table well in advance during one of these events.
A very nice restaurant owned and run by Damien & Monika. The Olive Garden is set back in the little square under a shady grapevine.
They offer a wide choice of salads, Greek food and more european dishes, specialities include goat and lamb cooked in the oven, as well as grilled meat and kebabs on the BBQ. They also cook good pizzas on special nights.
The adjoining shop sells some lovely gifts and house decor, such as lamps, ceramics, mirrors etc.
The restaurant also has wifi.
Fantastic fish and seafood restaurant owned by a local fisherman Kosta, and run by the family.
Fishing several times a week ensures the best catch.
They also offer a range of meat and pasta dishes. Lovely display and presentation of food.
Very friendly and busy restaurant right on the harbourside.
On such a small island there is very little need for more than one bakery, however they do sell a wide range of baked goods from basic bread, cakes, pizzas, cheese and spinach pies etc. It is often full during the early hours of the morning when everyone has finished partying for the night, they head straight to the bakery for breakfast!
From the center of the harbour walk into the small square and you will see the sign for the bakery.
Tucked into the corner of the old fish market is a small dark little shop with shelves stacked to the ceiling. On closer inspection this store sells the same things as the little supermarket, they are just harder to spot!
On the headland above the harbour sits the ruins of the 14th Century Castle of the Knights of St John, one of many Crusader Fortresses built throughout the Dodecanese. This is now home to the island museum and houses some interesting artefacts and archealogy. The Greek flag proudly flies from the top most point of the fortress.
This impressive looking church in the square at the top of the hill was never finished, the coloumns inside the church are reputedly from the ancient ruins of Patara in Turkey. By the side of the church near to the Mediterraneo Taverna is the Ossuary or Honeftiro in Greek, it has a small plaque with a skull and cross bones above the door.
As well as the school in the square there are the churches of Agios Spiridion and Agios Panagyria {the Virgin Mary}.
Just beneath the Castle on the path around the cliff side is a lonely little Lycian Tomb from the 4thC BC.
The Turkish Lycian coastline has an abundance of these tombs carved into the rock and with such close proximity to this area, it is inevitable that there would be similarities in the archaeology.
Right at the harbour entrance is the little Ottoman Mosque which has been restored andnow houses an Ethnological Museum with a small but nice collection of photographs, doors, utensils, jewellery and local costumes.
Up the hill close to the airport is the Paleocastro, or Acropolis.
The ruins may not be of great interest to many but you can scramble around for a good hour. Probably the best time to go is just before sunset as the vantage point is superb for sunset photos over the surrounding small islands and sea.
Behind the harbour on the top road are the whitewashed stone steps that lead all the way up the mountain.
This is a wonderful walk with views over the harbour, surrounding islands and Turkey. At the top of the mountain is the large church of St George of the Mountain, and if you scout around the flat rocks in this area you will come across the ancient 'patitiria' circles carved into the rock for crushing olives and grapes.
The Blue Grotto {Parasta} which is found just after Navlakas Bay is well worth a visit. The early morning light shines into the cave turning the water into a shocking blue and lighting up the stalactites. The cave is quite large at 75 meters long, 40 wide and 35 high, making it a rival to the famous Blue Grotto in Capri.
Several taxi boats make the trip throughout the day, depending on the weather. Sometimes the sea can be too high or too rough to enter safely, so the alternative is to swim in-but beware it gets very cold!
It is such a pleasure to sit at one of the harbourside cafes and watch the giant Turtles swim by.
They have been back in the area for several years now and it still amazing to see them swim by right in the harbour.
How many there are is unsure but numbers are growing.
In a traditional Kastellorizon house on the harbour close to the ferry dock. There are usually a doctor and nurses available, and possibly an army doctor on duty, as there is a good sized army base on the island.
English is spoken
As with almost everything else, a short walk around the harbour will aquaint you with all the services including the bank and ATM machine.
It is possible for the ATM to run out of money on the weekend or when there is a power and communications error on the island.
The only taxi on the island!
The taxi office is centrally located just off the harbour in the small square.
A small travel agency that does big things. The agency is in charge of all the ferry and airplane tickets, domestic and international.
All local Hotel bookings and tours and general information about the area.
They are also an agent for Western Union money transfers and organize for any packages and parcels that come down on the ferry from Rhodes.
Sea Taxi run by Antonis Patiniotis. Trips to the local islands and the Blue Cave, Agios Georgios, Plakas and Agios Stefanos.
One of the local sea taxis run by fisherman Kosta. Organise trips to the Blue Cave, taxi service to Agios Georgos and the local small islands.
