Swimming in Jamestown

Mackerel Cove, a sandy beach situated on a narrow neck of land off Beavertail Road, is perfect for swimming and water skiing. This deep water bay offers protected anchorage, for a relaxing day onboard. 

Other great swimming and diving spots are located off Fort Wetherill State Park, such as West or Fort coves

Hiking in Jamestown

Beavertail Lighthouse and Park is 153 acres of mixed grassy, wooded and rocky areas, traversed by a network of paths for walking or cycling. Located at the end of Beavertail Rd, on the southernmost part of the island. Also home to a lighthouse built in 1856, with a small museum attached. It is a great place to enjoy spectacular views of East and West Passages, or to climb the rocks bordering the shore. Free admission.

Swimming in Aquidneck Island

 

Several nice beaches are located along the legendary Ocean Dr: Gooseberry Beach is a private beach club open to the public with white sand and clear, calm ocean waters - perfect for swimming. Bailey’s Beach, also situated off Ocean Dr, is another nice secluded beach, good for swimming.

Biking in Aquidneck Island

 

Ocean Drive is a spectacular route along the water, fringed by gorgeous mansions, ideal for a bike ride. It is a ten mile loop at the tip of Newport, away from the traffic and easily accessible from all downtown marinas.

 

Other winding lanes will take bikers past First, Second and Third Beaches, through country roads offering spectacular wide-open views of the Atlantic Ocean.

 

Hiking in Aquidneck Island

 

The spectacular      Cliff Walk  is a must do while in Newport. Starting at First Beach, Cliff Walk is a 3.5 mile path follow ing the shore all the way to Bailey’s Beach. The promenade has views of sumptuous mansions on one side and the rocky coastline on the other. The whole walk takes  about 2 hours and is also a great place to jog.

Biking in Bristol Rhode Island

East Bay Bike Path

Great 14.5 mile paved bike trail, running from Bristol to Providence and offering a very scenic landscape. The path starts by the waterfront, less than two miles up the harbor from the Herreshoff marina. It follows an abandoned rail bed along Narragansett Bay and connects eight parks.
