Fairhaven is a wonderful place to discover by bike. Following an abandoned railroad, the Phoenix Bike Trail starts right next to the waterfront and winds for over 3miles, all the way to the Mattapoisett town line. The terrain is mostly flat and paved with mileage markers painted on the trail every quarter mile.
New Bedford’s restored historic waterfront district is delightful, with its cobblestone streets, brick buildings and Greek revival mansions. Do not miss the Seaman’s Chapel, located across from the Whaling Museum and described in Herman Melville’s ‘Moby Dick.’
Martha’s Vineyard offers very good kitesurfing conditions and is an excellent place to learn, thanks to its choice of shallow water spots.
Skyhigh Kiteboarding is a renowned kitesurfing school, offering all levels of lessons from certified instructors.

There are several good surf spots in Martha’s Vineyard, such as:
Long Pointin West Tisbury Wildlife Refuge, (off Edgartown-West Tisbury Rd) offers a sand bar with mostly rights. A small entrance fee is required to access the spot. South Beach State Park, south of Edgartown, has good rights on a sand bar. Lucy Vincent and Squibnocket in Chillmark are also good spots, but are private beaches.
Corner Five Surf Co.
5 Water St, Vineyard Haven
A great way to explore the Vineyard is by bike via the 100+ miles of bike paths that take you to the beach, state forests or from town to town.
The “down-island” route links Vineyard Haven to Oak Bluffs to Edgartown and back (roughly 25 mile round trip). It is mostly flat, with a mix of road and bike paths.
Experienced riders can bike “up-island” to Chilmark and Aquinnah, (more than 20 miles each way from Vineyard Haven) with breathtaking country landscapes and ocean views.
Aquinnah (or Gay Head) Cliffs
The spectacular multi-colored Aquinnah Cliffs are a national landmark. A short trek starts from the parking area, runs along the cliffs to a gorgeous beach. Aquinnah is located at the western tip of the island.
Martha’s Vineyard is famous for its scenic beaches. Among the nicest is Joseph A. Sylvia State Beach, a great family beach located between Oak Bluffs and Edgartown on Beach Rd. It is easy to reach via the bike paths.
Located at the bridge between Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven, Eastville Beach offers great panoramic views. Lighthouse Beach is located near Edgartown’s center (a short walk from North Water St) and is quiet and safe for children.
Edgartown
Dionis Beach
Shallow and calm. Located approximately 3 miles west of town, accessible by bike. Lifeguards and restrooms available. Great beach for swimming, safe for children.
