Lying 14 miles off Stonington, the closest harbor, and about 25 miles from Newport, Block Island is a sailors and tourist favorite destination. Despite its popularity and the number of visitors coming every summer, the island has retained its authenticity and laid back atmosphere. With close to 40 % of the land set aside for preservation, it has been listed by The Nature Conservancy as one of the “The Last Great Places” in the Western Hemisphere. Only 7 miles long and 4 miles wide, it is surrounded by 17 miles of beautiful beaches. No need for a car here, the island is small enough to be discovered by bike, and it is also a fantastic hiking spot. The island has two harbors, Old Harbor and New Harbor. The hub of activity and the island’s only village, is Old Harbor, where the majority of the island’s shopping, dining and nightlife is found. New Harbor, sheltered inside Great Salt Pond is where all the marinas are found, and is a very popular anchorage. About 2 miles of a scenic country road separate both harbors of this enchanting destination.
