Probably one of, if not the main social event for yachties in Palma, during which yacht crews team up and compete against each other for this much coveted trophy. The annual event takes place at the end of October (dates for 2011 are 13th to 15th of October). It’s a lot of fun, and the closing dinner is the highlight of the yachting social calendar.
Or to give it the correct Spanish title, Copa del Rey; The Kings Cup Regatta was first held in 1982, and has built up a reputation as a showcase event for top class racing teams. A week of racing and socializing is topped off with the gala prize giving dinner, usually attended by members of the Spanish Royal family. Hosted by the Club Real Nautico, the 2011 event will take place from July 30th - August 6th.. www.copadelreyaudimapfre.com
Club Real Nautico hosts many of the regattas and races throughout the year. See their busy calendar of events at:
A week long classic yacht race, held every summer in mid August. The regattas involve classic, vintage and traditional yachts and boats, and start off from Club de Mar. The event is organised by the Royal Hispanic Vintage Boat Foundation.
Palma has a huge year long calendar of cultural events, designed to satisfy all styles and tastes, from classical concerts, theatre, ballet, and traditional flamenco to jazz and pop, often featuring internationally acclaimed artists. There is also a full summer programme of events taking place at different venues around the city, including, Bellver Castle. As if this was not enough, the numerous festivals and Saints days, local feasts, harvest celebration etc. are all duly celebrated. The popular and renowned ‘Jazz Voyeur Festival’ takes place every October.
There are a few popular beaches around town: closest to the harbour to the east is the beach just before Portixol, by Nassau Beach Club, followed by a number of beaches towards Arenal, including the 6 km long Platia de Palma. To the west, coves around Cala Major and Illetes offer good swimming and smaller beaches, before reaching the tourist resorts of Portals, Palma Nova, Magaluf and Santa Ponsa. On the swimming pool front, some of the gyms, golf clubs and country clubs have pools; some hotels will also allow non-residents to use their facilities for a fee.

Palma and more generally Mallorca is a paradise for cyclists. In town, an already large network of cycle lanes is constantly being extended, making cycling around the city one of the fastest (and nicest) ways to get from A to B. The cycle track that runs along the Paseo Maritimo has become a magnet for visitors and locals alike, and extends past the airport all the way to Arenal 15 kms away to the south. It is now also possible to cycle all the way to Santa Ponsa (via Portals) to the North on the cycle track, bar a gap between Club de Mar and Illetes.
