Fairhaven is a wonderful place to discover by bike. Following an abandoned railroad, the Phoenix Bike Trail starts right next to the waterfront and winds for over 3miles, all the way to the Mattapoisett town line. The terrain is mostly flat and paved with mileage markers painted on the trail every quarter mile.
New Bedford’s restored historic waterfront district is delightful, with its cobblestone streets, brick buildings and Greek revival mansions. Do not miss the Seaman’s Chapel, located across from the Whaling Museum and described in Herman Melville’s ‘Moby Dick.’
Once the country’s number one whaling ports, New Bedford inspired Herman Melville to write and set the story of ‘Moby Dick’ and is now home to the world’s largest museum of its kind. Established in 1903, the museum displays the most outstanding collection of American whaling and maritime history. Highlights include an 89ft half-scale replica of a square rigged whaling boat and a 66ft blue whale skeleton. An interactive exhibit showcases whale’s and other sea mammals’ lives and way of communicating. Open 7/7, 9am-5pm, during summer.
